Step back in Time to 19th-century Clark County! Get to know what pre-Civil War life was like through the eyes of a local legend: Mennonite pioneer and wealthy entrepreneur Daniel Hertzler. Hertzler was a 19th-century corporate king and a money-lender who owned a grist mill, saw mill, brick distillery, whiskey distillery, and over 1,000 acres of farmland.
Hertzler’s wealth and status would ultimately lead to foul play and Mr. Hertzler’s demise. Experience the mystery – piece it together for yourself and investigate the house’s unsolvable murder while on your tour.
Throughout the year the 1854 Hertzler House offers seasonal programs, including:
- Special Sundays, May – August with history-themed activities and discounted admission.
- Discounted admission during the Fair at New Boston in September: $5 for adults; $1 for all students
- A Hertzler Holiday Celebration during the Christmas Season.
Class Tours:
Guided tours are a great way to immerse students in 19th-century living. Costumed tour guides bring the Hertzler House to life, recreating the lavish 19th-century home of Daniel Hertzler before the day of his mysterious murder. Any program can be customized to fit Ohio’s K-12 Academic Content Standards. Schedule in advance for small groups, or whole or multiple classroom-sized tours.
